The Bergen County Office of LGBTQ+ Services provides a safe and welcoming environment for residents who identify as LGBTQ+. The Office promotes awareness, equality and acceptance through advocacy, education and outreach. We want all Bergen County residents to live authentically in their communities and to be able to access all of the many resources that are available.

Job Description:           

This employment opportunity is to serve as a Community Relations Specialist in the Office of LGBTQ+ Services. Under direction, assists in the organization and development of a community relations program to advance community harmony, and performs field work to carry out the objectives; does related work as required.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Organizes an effective work program of community relations.
  • Plans, develops, and executes an approved program of survey and research relating to community problems.
  • Develops and maintains a harmonious liaison between the community and various government or private agencies to discuss all matters related to the reduction of prejudice and the elimination of discrimination in the area.
  • Encourages community groups to organize and negotiate with private organizations and government agencies to promote acceptance of the objectives of a program to advance community harmony.
  • Prepares the residents for acceptance of new neighbors, new programs, or new ideas designed to promote community harmony.
  • Speaks to private, civic, government, fraternal, and religious organizations to promote peaceful neighborhood and school integration as it relates to community harmony.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest sociological materials and journals concerning residence, race, relocation, education, and intergroup relations.
  • Prepares newspaper releases and prepares copies for journals and trade papers.
  • Gathers and compiles statistical data pertaining to changes in neighborhood and to project anticipated problems.
  • Prepares reports.

Schedule:   

  • Full time (40 hours/week) Monday – Friday

Education & Experience Requirements:   

  • High School Diploma
  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ populations preferred

Other Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey to perform essential duties of the position.
  • Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Salary: $55,000 / per annum, maximum commensurate with experience
