Celebrating 25 Years of Honor, Service, and Community at the Spokane Veterans Home

Spokane Veterans Home 25th Anniversary

On September 28, 2026, the Spokane Veterans Home proudly marked its 25th anniversary—celebrating a quarter‑century of compassionate care, community partnership, and unwavering dedication to Washington’s Veterans and their families. Since its grand opening on September 28, 2001 and the arrival of its first residents on October 1 of that same year, the home has upheld a steadfast mission: to provide a place of honor, safety, dignity, and healing for those who served.

The anniversary celebration was held on a beautiful sunny day, warm and full of energy. Residents, families, volunteers, and staff gathered for a Surf and Turf BBQ lunch featuring steak, shrimp, potatoes, vegetables, fresh bread, and ice cream cake. Music filled the air, conversations flowed easily, and laughter carried across the courtyard—a perfect setting for marking such a meaningful milestone.

Administrator Mark Michaels thanked the incredible volunteers and partners who helped make the day special. The Combat Veteran Motorcycle Association generously grilled steaks for residents and staff. The Medical Lake High School Band performed fantastic music that residents thoroughly enjoyed. The Spokane Veterans Home Volunteers, Fairchild Air Force Base volunteers, Honor Flight volunteers, and Medical Lake area car clubs all contributed to the vibrant atmosphere. Special appreciation was given to Jim Wentland and the Cattlemen Association for their long‑standing and deeply valued donation of steak—a tradition that has brought joy to the home for many years.

WDVA Director David Puente Jr. joined the celebration and reflected on this momentous occasion. In his remarks, he highlighted the home’s legacy and its promising future, including work underway on a new replacement facility near the Mann‑Grandstaff VA Medical Center. As he shared:  “This home opened its doors in 2001 with a clear vision—to provide Veterans and their families with a place of honor, safety, dignity, and healing. That foundation, built a quarter‑century ago, continues to guide us today.”

Puente shared updates on the future Spokane Veterans Home campus, which will expand care capabilities, enhance environment and privacy, and strengthen access to medical services. Even after the August 4, 2026 Spokane Complex Fire affected portions of the newly acquired land, the project remains firmly on track and represents Washington State’s enduring commitment to high‑quality care for Veterans.

As the Spokane Veterans Home celebrates 25 years of service and looks toward its next chapter, the heart of its mission remains unchanged. The home continues to honor those who served with dignity, respect, and compassion—values that will guide its work for decades to come.
