The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Calls on Community for Suicide Prevention Support

WARRENTON, Va. – Suicide is a serious public health issue that affects individuals, families, and communities. The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District encourages the community to learn the warning signs of suicide and connect people who might need help with resources.

“Suicide prevention is a shared responsibility, and no one should feel that they have to face a moment of crisis alone,” said Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District Director J. Carr, M.D. “We encourage everyone in our community to learn the warning signs, reach out to someone who may be struggling, and help connect them with support and care. By listening without judgment, strengthening our connections, and making sure people know where to turn for help, we can create a community where seeking help is a sign of strength and every life is valued.”

In 2024, 1,191 Virginians lost their lives to suicide. Despite a 3/9% decrease from 2023, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death in Virginia.  In 2024, in all injury death counts by county, Fauquier had 40 (52.7/100000), Rappahannock had two (26.7/100000), Madison had 12 (84.2/100000), Orange had 29 (74.4/100000), and Culpeper had 37 (65.9/100000).

The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District encourages you to check on friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers; share reliable suicide prevention resources; and remind those who are struggling that help and hope are available.
