Truck parking facilities to ease roadside congestion, address community complaints
The government is investing heavily in dedicated truck parking and auto zones to move heavy-duty vehicles and commercial activities away from residential communities and public roadways, with facilities at Grove and Enmore.
Minister of Housing, Collin Croal said the facilities will provide designated spaces where truck operators can park, service and repair their vehicles, while creating an avenue for activities such as bodywork and spray painting to be carried out away from homes and neighbourhoods.
The Grove facility, located at Golden Grove on the East Bank Demerara, has seen its first phase completed following the development of approximately 12 acres of land.
The investment is to the tune of $500 million and forms part of government’s wider effort to provide organised spaces for commercial and industrial activities.
“This is part of providing an access and avenue, from government, with commercial aspect, to be able to have an area that they can come and be able to service or repair your vehicle,” Minister Croal said.
Additionally, at Enmore, another 30-acre truck parking and auto zone is being developed in six lots.
Overall works are approximately 50 per cent complete, and the entire facility is expected to be finished before the end of November.
The Enmore facility is expected to accommodate at least 500 trucks, with approximately $1.7 billion being invested in its development.
According to Minister Croal, operational arrangements for both facilities will be announced shortly, including the parameters governing access and the services that will be offered.
The developments are intended to address recurring complaints from residents about trucks obstructing roadways, damaging road shoulders and carrying out repairs and spray-painting activities in residential areas.
The designated facilities will also help reduce oil leakage and other environmental and drainage concerns associated with servicing heavy vehicles on public roads.
The housing minister stated that the initiative presents opportunities for private enterprise to establish similar truck stops and auto zones, particularly along major highways, providing commercial operators with designated areas for parking, maintenance and other services.
