Town hall meetings to discuss equity gaps for Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard-of-Hearing community
The Nevada Commission for Persons who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing (D/DB/HH) is hosting its annual statewide inclusion tour this October, inviting community members to participate in a series of in-person town hall meetings focused on accessibility, equity and legislative advocacy.
The tour, titled “Standing in Unity: Statewide Accessibility & Advocacy Tour - Show Up Nevada,” aims to amplify the voices of D/DB/HH and speech-impaired Nevadans while engaging allies, service providers and policymakers in meaningful dialogue. These town halls are an important opportunity to reflect on upcoming legislative initiatives, identify ongoing service gaps and shape the future of inclusive policy in Nevada.
“We need allies,” said Obioma Officer, executive director of the D/DB/HH commission. “Everyone will encounter someone with a disability at some point. These town halls are a chance to listen, learn and lead with respect and inclusion.”
For the one in four adults in Nevada living with a disability, accessibility remains a pressing issue. Laws passed in 2025, such as interpreters being required in hospitals and at certain polling places, are a step forward. But more work is needed to make sure everyone can live with independence, respect and full participation in their communities.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- Discuss lessons learned and how to prepare for the Legislative session in 2027.
- Provide feedback on D/DB/HH service provisions and recommended solutions.
- Contribute to the commission’s annual report and December 2026 Engagement Conference.
- Help shape future initiatives that promote autonomy, equity, and access.
