You are NOT alone; Camp Atterbury partners with community to bring suicide prevention awareness
CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. – Service members and community leaders gathered at Camp Atterbury on Sept. 30, 2026 to dedicate a bench that brings awareness to suicide prevention.
The moment brings awareness to suicide prevention month in the Indiana National Guard, a time to raise greater awareness of resources for Guardsmen, civilians and family members who may need crisis support or want to help someone they know.
“We are doing this because having even one attempt is too many,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Brad Simmons, the Camp Atterbury senior enlisted advisor. “We need the awareness to be out there. We need all the resources possible. Everyone is a part of a team, and we need that team to go on.”
The newly dedicated benches are part of a broader initiative by the Suicide Coalition of Johnson County, led by Executive Director Kathleen Ratcliff, in partnership with Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the Pendleton Correctional Facility. The benches were built as a reminder of resources available for individuals experiencing crisis.
"These benches are hopefully a reminder that there are people you can talk to, that you're not alone in these feelings," said Ratcliff.
